Your Guide to Framing Fine Art Prints | Austin Bloom

From our journal archive — originally shared October 2025

Choosing the right frame for your fine art print can feel overwhelming. This guide walks you through every decision — from print medium to frame colour to shipping — so you can order with confidence.

---

Hello there!

We want to make sure you feel confident when choosing your print, so here is a simple guide to help you understand how each option works. Whether you are framing with us or taking your print to a local framer, this should answer the questions we hear most often.

With love,
Estée and Stu x

STEP 1: CHOOSE YOUR PRINT MEDIUM

Cotton Rag Paper

This is a fine art paper with a soft, matte texture. If you select framing for this option, your print will come framed behind perspex. Perspex is perfect for lighter-toned prints as it protects the artwork while keeping it lightweight.

If your print has a darker background, we recommend asking your local framer to use non-reflective Ultra Vue instead of perspex. It reduces glare and helps every detail stay visible, creating a beautiful gallery-style finish.

Satin Canvas

Satin canvas is printed on artist-grade canvas and stretched over timber before being framed. It does not require glass or perspex, which allows the texture to be seen clearly. Canvas gives the look and feel of an original painting and works especially well for darker artworks such as Rose, Waterlily, Phalaenopsis, Bracken, Chamomile and Ramble.

STEP 2: CHOOSE YOUR FRAME

Natural — Flooded Gum

If you select Natural, your print will be framed in Flooded Gum, a soft and warm timber that complements greens, neutrals and lighter tones.

Black — Stained Timber

If you select Black, your print will be framed in stained timber, either Flooded Gum or American Ash, for a refined and contemporary finish that enhances darker artworks and limited editions.

All frames are made from plantation-grown, FSC-certified timbers that are ethically and sustainably sourced.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT COMBINATION

Our recommendations by print

Over time, we have seen certain combinations work particularly well. Lighter, softer prints — those with green, cream and neutral tones — tend to sing in cotton rag with our Natural Flooded Gum frame. The warmth of the timber draws out the organic quality of the florals without competing for attention.

For darker, moodier works — deep greens, rich blacks, the botanical drama of a Rose or Bracken — canvas in our Black stained frame is hard to beat. The canvas texture adds a painterly depth, and the dark frame gives the piece a gallery-weight presence on the wall.

If you are still unsure, our Blankwall AR tool lets you preview prints on your actual wall before ordering. And for Adelaide customers, an in-home consultation with Estée can take all the guesswork out of the decision.

SIZING

What size should I choose?

When selecting your size, we recommend choosing A2 or larger for the best visual impact, but it always depends on your wall space and how you would like the artwork to sit in your room. For guidance, refer to the Size Guide on our website to help you visualise the right fit.

If you select framing, your piece will arrive ready to hang. If you choose no frame, your print will arrive rolled in a protective tube, ready for you to take to your own framer or frame at home.

We do offer A4 prints; however, these are not available framed. If you would like to frame an A4 print, you can purchase a ready-made frame separately. We recommend Country Road for beautiful, high-quality options.

SHIPPING AND CARE

Framed prints are made to order and shipped within four weeks. To protect your artwork, keep it out of direct sunlight. Each print is archival quality and designed to last more than 75 years when cared for correctly.

FRAMING IT YOURSELF

If you prefer to frame your piece locally, simply take your print to your trusted framer and choose your preferred style. Our prints are designed edge to edge, but you can add a mat board if you wish.

If you are framing a cotton rag print, handle it carefully with white gloves to protect the surface and maintain the longevity of the print itself.

IN-HOME CONSULTATIONS

See the materials in person

If you are local to Adelaide, Estée would love to visit your home or workspace for a personal art consultation. She can bring framed examples and A5 samples from our collection, available in both cotton rag and satin canvas, to help you see and feel the materials in person.

These in-home visits have been such a positive experience for our clients. Together, we can explore how to pair your existing pieces with Austin Bloom prints, choose tones that complement your space, and find the right artwork to bring warmth and balance into your environment.

If this is something that would be helpful, please reach out at hello@austinbloom.com.au — Estée would love to arrange a time that suits.

★★★★★
"A stunningly beautiful print. Looks even better in real life. Communication and ordering process excellent. Print arrived securely and in protective packaging. The wrapping enabled easy relocation into a frame — something I was at first fearful of but super easy. Very, very happy with purchase. Thanks Estée and Stu."
