Behind the DuCalme Scenes at Austin Bloom: How We Create Our Art | Austin Bloom

From the studio — originally shared August 2025

Ever wondered how oversized botanical fine art prints are made? Step inside Austin Bloom's studio process — from cameras and lighting setups to the production team that brings each piece to life.

Hello there!

We would love to share with you a behind-the-scenes look at the production crew and our latest collection in progress. Right from the beginning, we have been working towards oversized artwork — think exhibition-sized prints and wallpaper, suitable for large walls, high ceilings and galleries.

With love,
Estée and Stu x

OUR PROCESS

How a print comes to life

Our process includes multiple cameras and types, large backdrops, working with natural light and complex lighting setups, and a production team to manage everything in between. Every finished piece you see is the result of a passionate team pushing the boundaries of what is possible, exploring new ways of creating and capturing, and a robust post-production process.

THE CREW

Meet Weronika and Yanni

Please meet Weronika and Yanni, our lovely photographers, with Estée on the flowers and Stu on the drill. Each shoot is a collaborative effort — Estée builds the florals and compositions, while the photography team captures them with the precision and depth that our large-format printing demands.

WHY OVERSIZED MATTERS

Designed for impact

From the very beginning of Austin Bloom, we have been drawn to scale. There is something about a large-format print — one that fills a wall, that you can stand in front of and feel surrounded by — that a smaller piece simply cannot replicate. It changes how a room feels. It transforms a wall from background into experience.

Working at this scale means every detail matters. The lighting must be precise, the colour calibration exact, and the post-production meticulous. A flaw that would be invisible at A4 becomes unmissable at A0. This is why our studio process is so hands-on — there are no shortcuts at this scale, and that is exactly how we like it.

FROM STUDIO TO PRINT

Post-production and printing

Once the photography session wraps, the real precision begins. Each image goes through careful colour grading to ensure what you see on screen matches what arrives on your wall. This is one of the most painstaking stages — we proof every piece at multiple sizes, checking that fine details hold at scale and that the colour palette stays true across both canvas and cotton rag substrates.

Our printing partners are local, specialist fine art printers who understand the demands of large-format work. We use archival pigment inks rated to 75+ years, which means the depth and richness of colour you see today will be there for generations. Each print is individually quality-checked before it leaves the studio. Learn more about our materials and printing process →

THE STUDIO ITSELF

Where the work happens

Our studio is based in Adelaide, South Australia — a bright, purpose-built space where we can work at the scale these pieces demand. The backdrops alone can stretch several metres wide, and we need room to move around them while building and photographing each composition. It is a space designed for making, not just capturing.

There is always music playing, often something French or ambient, and the studio smells like whatever flowers Estée has brought in that morning. The atmosphere matters — we believe that the energy of the space finds its way into the finished work, and we want that energy to be calm, focused and joyful.
